SEI to Host High School Cybersecurity Challenge

May 11, 2017—The SEI will host Cybersecurity Challenge, a three-day science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) event for high school students. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., July 12-14, 2017 on the Carnegie Mellon University campus. The event is sponsored by the SEI and (ISC)2 Pittsburgh Chapter. Registration is free, but space is limited.
“The number of threats in the cyber realm is growing, and the nature of the threat is evolving as new devices become part of the networked world,” said the SEI’s Jonathan Frederick. “Not only can today’s hacker use techniques like malware or social engineering to steal your information, but they can also compromise your network-connected cars and homes. We’re hosting this event not only to educate the kids about these dangers but to help inspire the next generation of cybersecurity engineers we’ll rely on to keep us safe in the future.”
Frederick noted that students who wish to participate need no experience. “If they can turn on a computer, then they’re ready to go.”
At the Cyber Challenge event, the students will learn how hackers operate, how to spot hackers and attacks, how to protect themselves online, and how to use real, cutting-edge tools to protect computer systems. They’ll also get to simulate the real-world effects of cyber attacks using a 3D gaming environment developed to train Department of Defense personnel and other professionals.
Cyber Challenge is open to any high school student, including incoming freshmen and outgoing seniors. Students wishing to participate should register by May 31, 2017. Lunches will be provided. Parking not included.
