Feiler Named SEI Fellow

August 29, 2016—The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has honored Peter Feiler by naming him an SEI Fellow. Feiler, whose career at the SEI spans 31 years, is a principal research scientist. The SEI awards the position of Fellow to staff who have made an outstanding contribution to the work of the SEI and from whom SEI leadership may expect valuable advice for advancing the Institute’s mission.
SEI Director and CEO Paul Nielsen lauded Feiler for his significant contributions over a long and productive career. “Peter joins a select group of SEI legends who have contributed so much, not only to SEI, but to the nation and the global software engineering community,” said Nielsen.
Feiler’s research interests include the architecture-centric engineering and assurance of safety-critical embedded software systems. He has collaborated with researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and other research institutions to develop model-based architecture technology, and he is investigating its practicality with commercial industry.
Feiler is the technical lead and author of the SAE AS-2C Architecture Analysis & Design Language (AADL) standard. AADL is a framework that allows analysis of system (and system of systems) designs prior to development and supports an architecture-centric, model-based development approach throughout the system lifecycle. AADL lowers development and maintenance costs while improving reliability and safety. Feiler has lent his expertise in this area to several recent Department of Defense projects, including the Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator, Future Vertical Lift, and the DARPA High-Assurance Cyber Military Systems program.
“I appreciate the recognition for my contributions as an SEI member, in particular in the last 16 years as technical lead of the SAE AADL standard,” said Feiler. “I am excited about the impact virtual system integration technology based on AADL has had on the practitioner community, and I’m pleased to see researchers leveraging AADL in their work. This would not have been possible without contributions by the SAE AADL committee members and by the SEI team working with me.”
Before joining the SEI, Feiler conducted research at the Siemens Corporate Research and Technology Lab in Princeton, New Jersey. In this role, he led a group working in software technology. At Siemens, Feiler also served as system architect for the software development environment in a large-scale product development. Feiler holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University and is a senior member and member of ACM, IEEE, and SAE International.
