Abstract
Careers in the field of cybersecurity are unique in the sense that they often do not follow a predetermined area of study or path. In light of the growing shortage in the cybersecurity workforce, this paper examines how a professional can prepare for and obtain a position in the field of cybersecurity. The paper aims to provide guidance for those interested in entering the field about the paths they can take to be successful. It also provides recommendations for educators to better support students that show interest and promise for a role in cybersecurity, as well as for employers to find and cultivate talent.
