SEI Fellow Linda Northrop and SEI Honored at ICSE Conference

Article

July 25, 2014—In June, software engineering professionals from around the world convened in Hyderabad, India for the 36th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE). In an awards ceremony conducted during the event, the IEEE Computer Society Technical Council on Software Engineering (TCSE) honored SEI Fellow Linda Northrop with its Distinguished Service Award. The technical council also honored the contributions of the entire SEI by presenting it the inaugural Software Engineering Distinguished Synergy Award.

The TCSE's Software Engineering Distinguished Service Award is presented annually for outstanding and/or sustained contributions and service to the software engineering community. In selecting Northrop for its 2014 Distinguished Service Award, the TCSE cited Northrop's contributions in the areas of software product line development, software-architecture-centric engineering, and ultra-large-scale systems.

The TCSE selection committee noted, "Not only did Linda make important technical contributions in these areas, but more importantly, her leadership and community engagement helped catalyze widespread adoption of these concepts. As a result of Linda's work over the past 24 years at the Software Engineering Institute, an experience base and supporting materials for these practices have been developed and codified in collaboration with many researchers and practitioners in the international community."

The TCSE also honored the SEI with its 2014 Software Engineering Synergy Award. This award is presented annually to teams who have made outstanding contributions by fostering effective partnerships between industry and universities. On hand to accept the award for the SEI were Northrop, Grace Lewis, Rick Kazman, Ipek Ozkaya, Mark Sherman, and Forrest Shull.

"This is the face of the SEI at ICSE 2014," said Northrop on behalf of the SEI, "but the award belongs to all the SEI men and women for their talent and innovation, and for their continued commitment to collaborating with and contributing to the global software engineering research community. We are well aware that many of you are also major contributors and so we are humbled and deeply honored. On behalf of the SEI leadership and technical staff we thank you. Special thanks also to Pankaj, his community, and committee for a wonderful ICSE."
