PITTSBURGH, PA, February 5, 2013—Registration for the ninth annual SEI Architecture Technology User Network (SATURN) Conference 2013 is now open. SATURN 2013 will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from April 29-May 3 and will feature three keynote presentations by leaders in the field of software development and architecture, Mary Poppendieck, Scott Berkun, and Stephan Murer; and a special invited talk by Philippe Kruchten.

Mary Poppendieck, award-winning author and expert on Lean software development, started her career as a process control programmer, then moved on to manage the IT department of a manufacturing plant. She then ended up in product development, where she was both a product champion and department manager. After managing a government software project in 1998, she wrote the award-winning book Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit, and has co-authored two other books: Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash and Leading Lean Software Development: Results are Not the Point with her husband, Tom.

Scott Berkun is the best-selling author of Making Things Happen, The Myths of Innovation, Confessions of a Public Speaker, and Mindfire: Big Ideas for Curious Minds.  He worked at Microsoft from 1994 to 2003 on Internet Explorer 1.0 to 5.0, Windows, and MSN and as team lead at WordPress.com from 2010 to 2012. He now works full time as an author and speaker. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Wired Magazine, Forbes, The Economist, and other media. He has contributed to Harvard Business and BusinessWeek  and appears frequently on CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, and NPR for his expertise  on various subjects. He runs a popular blog with videos, podcasts, and essays, at www.scottberkun.com and tweets at @berkun.

Stephan Murer is a managing director of Credit Suisse, where he has also worked as chief architect, chief technology officer, internal consultant, project lead, and technical expert. Over the course of 14 years, he has implemented a managed evolution strategy in Credit Suisse and has allowed for the adoption of an enterprise service-oriented architecture (SOA). He is also a co-author of the book Managed Evolution, A Strategy for Very Large Information Systems, where he summarizes his experiences in evolving the Credit Suisse information system. Alongside maintaining Credit Suisse's information systems architecture, Murer served as a member of the Swiss National Research Council, where he helped the National Science Foundation allocate research funding.

Philippe Kruchten has been a software architect for 35 years first at Alcatel and then at Rational Software (now IBM). He has worked mostly on large technical systems in telecommunication, aerospace, defense, and transportation. In 2004 he became a professor of software engineering at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he teaches software project management and entrepreneurship and conducts research on software processes and  software architecture—architecture knowledge management, technical debt, and complexity. He is the founder of Agile Vancouver, a senior member of the IEEE Computer Society, and a professional engineer in Canada.

In addition to the keynote and invited presentations, the SATURN 2013 Conference includes an extensive program of technical sessions, practical tutorials, and two SEI courses. The conference provides attendees with the opportunity to network with international industry leaders in the field of software architecture.

SATURN 2013 now features a three-tiered pricing structure for conference registration:

  • Super Early-Bird: February 4-March 10, $700
  • Early-Bird: March 11-April 1, $800
  • Regular Rate: After April 1, $1000

Attendees will receive 10 percent off all tutorials if they enroll in two or more. The pricing for tutorials is as follows:

  • Before April 1, $400
  • After April 1, $500

For the fourth year, IEEE Software magazine will collaborate with the SEI on the SATURN Conference. The extended collaboration continues to enhance the conference experience for participants with talks by IEEE Software board members, networking events, and speaker awards.
