FloCon 2022 Opens Call for Abstracts on Data-Driven Security
Article

July 12, 2021—FloCon, the SEI’s annual conference on data analysis for networked system security, is calling for participation in its 2022 event. Operational analysts, data analysts, tool developers, researchers, security professionals, and others interested in data-driven security are invited to submit abstracts for presentations, posters, and demonstrations to FloCon’s submission website by August 27.

FloCon 2022, which will be held virtually, will take place January 10-13, 2022. Conference organizers are seeking submissions about novel uses of big data to address thorny security problems. Submissions must describe the theory, creation, implementation, or operational use of data analysis in support of security operations for networked systems. The strongest submissions will give participants practicable insights, code from a successful project, or analytics they can investigate and implement. The event’s call for participation web page lists topic suggestions, including automated decision support, network defense, employing scalable statistical techniques, and more.

FloCon 2022 chair and SEI network defense analyst Joshua Fallon sees real-world upheavals driving demand for new data analysis capabilities for security. “Disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic can quickly and broadly change the utility and applicability of archived data,” he said, “so analysis needs to adapt in near-real time.”

Technological disruptions are also changing the game, said Fallon. “With increasing adoption of cloud services, more data is in transit—and in the hands of more service providers—than ever. We need novel approaches to monitoring and protecting that data, both at rest and in transit. As the growth of data lakes outstrips at-volume analysis capacity, diamond-in-the-rough, small-data insights can drive innovation in the use of large datasets.”

FloCon’s practical, practitioner-oriented sessions feature online training, presentations, and keynote speakers from the security and data analysis community. Attendees can participate in interactive panels, chats, and breakout sessions and explore virtual vendor demos.
