ER 2024 to Feature the Latest on Conceptual Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, and Beyond
Article

September 18, 2024—The 43rd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling this week announced its agenda. The event, known as ER 2024 after its original focus on the entity-relationship model, takes place October 28-31 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The four-day program features workshops, tutorials, speakers, presentations, and social events centered around emerging issues and future challenges in conceptual modeling research and practice.

Conceptual modeling describes the “semantics of software applications at a high level or abstraction,” a level of rigor that is particularly important for AI and ML systems. The SEI joins a long list of organizations from around the world that have hosted the ER conference since the first event in 1979.

The first day of ER 2024 is dedicated to workshops and tutorials. Topics include data fabric, spatial conceptual modeling, benchmarking ontology reasoners, and more.

Tuesday, October 29, will kick off the event’s presentations on the theme of Conceptual Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, and Beyond and include speakers on

  • advanced modeling languages
  • ontological modeling
  • domain and goal modeling
  • language models and conceptual modeling
  • applications of conceptual modeling
  • process modeling

The day will end with a welcome reception. Poster sessions and demonstrations will be held throughout the event.

ER 2024 will feature three keynote speakers:

  • Nicola Guarino, retired research associate at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Research Council (ISTC-CNR) and former director of the ISTC-CNR Laboratory for Applied Ontology (LOA)
  • Paul Nielsen, director and chief executive officer of the SEI
  • Pradeep Ravikumar, professor of machine learning in the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science

All three keynote speakers will participate in a panel on October 30. The day will conclude with a dinner aboard the Gateway Clipper River Cruise.
