Pittsburgh, Pa., May 18, 2015—Researchers from the CERT Division of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University will discuss current work associated with Department of Defense (DoD) cyber community of interest (COI) technology challenges and gaps in a day-long, interactive, virtual event on June 23. Registration is now open for CERT Alignment with Cyber COI Challenges and Gaps.

Topics will include

• how mission-readiness can be assessed at a DoD scale
• a tool that shows whether a connection to the web is secure and what information is being transmitted
• the mutual benefits and interests between the CERT Division and the cyber COI
• how DevOps methodologies address dynamic changes in cyberspace with the high-fidelity automation of networks, systems, and, applications
• how a small subset of features from dynamic malware analysis can help to uncover possible relationships among files and to direct static reverse engineering efforts
• undesired flows of sensitive information within and between Android apps
• mobile device security enhancements with defensive and offensive uses

Building on deep experience in addressing cybersecurity threats and risks with science-based tools and technologies, the CERT Division aligns its research and development activities with roadmap objectives of the cyber COI:

• trust
• resilient infrastructure
• agile operations
• assuring effective missions
• modeling, simulation, and experimentation (MSE)
• embedded, mobile, and tactical (EMT)

COIs are a part of Reliance 21, which is the over-arching framework of the DoD’s Science and Technology (S&T) joint coordination and planning process. Underpinning the S&T leadership is an ecosystem of technical groups known as communities of interest.

The SEI’s CERT Division researches hard technical problems that challenge the DoD S&T cyber Community of Interest (COI), such as cyber mission control, resilient algorithms and protocols, and trust foundations.
